In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to enable macros in excel.

A point to note is that, it is advisable to keep macros disable unless you need the option enabled for your project.

Just a brief overview of macros

Microsoft Office documents — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other types of documents may have embedded code written in a programming language known as Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).

However, malicious people could write VBA code to create macros that  can do harmful things. They could then embed these macros in Office documents which could damage your computer if opened.

How to enable/disable macros

  1. Open a blank excel sheet.
  2. On the top left hand corner of your opened sheet, click on file and scroll down to options (usually the last option) as shown in the figure below.
  3. On the page that pops up, scroll down to trust center and click on it
  4. Next click on trust center settings on the right hand side of the page
  5. On the page that comes up, look for macro settings (along the middle of the items listed) and click on it.
  6. The macro settings pops up. Scroll to the last option which is (enable all macros (not recommended, potentially dangerous code can run) ) and check it.
  7. Now you should be able to open any macro excel file

NB: Unless you need the macro setting enabled, always have it disabled.

If you want to disable the macros, repeat the steps above. But in step 6 choose “disable all macros with notification.”
